Delgany Diaries - The During Edit
Welcome to Delgany Diaries – The During Edit
We’re excited to share the second update from our Delgany project. This phase is where all the planning starts to come to life, and we’re thrilled to take you through this project.
The Journey Begins
With the brief in hand, we began the exciting process of turning our client’s vision into reality. This stage is all about carefully planning and designing the layout, ensuring every space works perfectly for our clients and their family. After a full survey and measurements, we worked on creating several layout options for each room, with the main goal of solving any issues and improving the flow of the home. We also incorporated additional storage where possible to meet the needs of the family and modernized the space to create a brighter, more uplifting atmosphere.
Once the concept designs were finalised, we were ready to dive into the renovation. Demolition day is always an exciting milestone – clearing out the old to make way for the new is always satisfying.
If you’re curious about the full renovation process, we’ve detailed the order of works in a previous blog, which you can check out here: House Renovation Process: Order of Works
Reimagining the Living Room
The living room was one of the first spaces to undergo a change. The double doors into the dining room were rarely used, so we decided to block them up, which balanced the room better. We kept the existing fireplace, hearth, and stove, as they added charm to the space. To update the look, we introduced a custom low-level TV unit painted in Colourtrend "Standing Tall," a stunning contemporary shade. We also added some beautiful wall panelling to give the room extra interest. The warm oak herringbone flooring, along with elegant wave curtains and roman blinds in a soft linen, created a cohesive, inviting space.
Transforming the Dining Room into a TV Room
The adjoining dining room was feeling a bit cramped, with its multiple doors and lack of flow. Our solution? Reimagine it as a cozy family TV room. We blocked up the door to the kitchen area to give us a clean slate, and again, retained the fireplace. We primed and painted the mantle to give it a refreshed look and added another bespoke TV unit in Colourtrend "Wolfhound," a beautiful earthy shade that tied the space together.
Opening Up the Hall
The entry hall was dark and unwelcoming, drenched in pine wood and lacking storage. It also had a dated separation between the hall and the porch, blocking natural light. With our design in hand, we removed this separation, creating a more open and airy space. We also removed the old understairs storage to create a more generous feeling in the hall. While the existing floors were in good condition, they were a bit outdated, so we decided to update them to better suit the modern design. We also added some beautiful panelling to the space, creating a welcoming first impression as you enter the home.
The Perfect Spot
Moving upstairs, we started with the landing, which was essentially a blank canvas. Our focus here was to create additional storage while maintaining the flow and proportions of the space. With the spacious landing area, we quickly recognized the potential to create a cozy reading nook – a perfect spot to relax, unwind, and enjoy the surrounding views.
The master bedroom, ensuite, and walk-in wardrobe all needed a refresh. The proportions of these rooms were a bit off, and the space didn’t feel luxurious. While there were no structural changes, we removed part of the internal wall between the bedroom and the walk-in wardrobe, which helped improve the flow of the space. We also resized the oversized ensuite to create space for much-needed storage, including a new cupboard accessed from the landing. This gave the master suite a more balanced and spacious feel, while the walk-in wardrobe became much more functional.
Updating the Bedrooms
Throughout the upstairs bedrooms, we stripped out the outdated beams and added custom wardrobes to maximize storage and improve the overall look of each room. The spaces were transformed into stylish, practical bedrooms that now suit the needs of the family perfectly.
Family Bathroom and Ensuites
One of the biggest challenges was working with the existing family bathroom and two ensuites, especially since they all had underfloor heating. Any changes needed to accommodate this system, which took some careful planning. After investigating the space and considering all options, we were able to come up with a plan that worked for each bathroom, ensuring both functionality and comfort.
A Fresh New Look Throughout
To complete the update, we primed all the windows and doors then painted them in a soft, warm off-white. This simple change made a huge difference, helping to tone down the pine wood and brighten the whole space.
